Rania Abdel Fattah was arrested on April 25, 2016 following a field event in Cairo protesting against the border agreement between Egypt and Saudi Arabia, under which the islands of Tiran and Sanafir were ceded to Saudi Arabia. She was detained in the Nile Palace section under case No. 6408 for 2016, Nile Palace Misdemeanors. She was charged with participating in a rally, incitement to demonstrate without a permit with the purpose of disturbing public security and public order, disrupting the movement of transportation, disrupting the interests of citizens, and broadcasting false news and statements. She was released on bail of 500 pounds on April 27, 2016 and sentenced in absentia to two years’ imprisonment with labor on May 14, 2016.
