Basma Refaat was arrested on March 6, 2016 while she and her brother went to the New Egypt department to report her husband’s enforced disappearance. They were also forcibly disappeared until she appeared after three days as a defendant in the murder of Attorney General Hasham Barakat, as she was accused of financing the cell that killed Chancellor Hashm Barakat. She was imprisoned pending investigations and transferred to El Qanater prison. She was sentenced on 22 July 2017 to 15 years in prison, and the sentence was upheld on 25 November 2018. She is still a prisoner executing the sentence – Violations she suffered: – three days of enforced disappearance, during which she was tortured and threatened with rape to force her to confess – prevented from having lawyers attend investigations with her – prevented from visits, which led her to go on a hunger strike – she underwent a surgical intervention of her jaw and teeth in the Al-Qanater prison hospital. There was a medical error that led to severe bleeding in the wound and the operation stopped before it was complete. She also experienced a severe rise of blood pressure that led to bleeding in the nose.
