Mohamed Khairy was arrested in his home in Aswan on February 13, 2014 on an arrest warrant, and brought under case No. 180 of 2014, the first administrative of Aswan, known as the “Events of the General Hospital”, on charges of setting fire to police cars in Baswan during previous marches. He was detained pending investigation and subsequently released. He was arrested in home again on April 17, 2015, and charged with joining a banned group. He was detained pending investigation and then released. On 30 November 2015, he was sentenced to life imprisonment in absentia in the case of the events of the General Hospital.
