Mahmoud Ashraf was arrested as a minor with others after the Muharram Bey protests in Alexandria that took place after the taraweeh prayers on June 30, 2014. They were presented before the prosecution under case No. 9463 of 2014, Muharram Bey administrative. He was charged with demonstrating without a permit, joining a terrorist group, terrorizing citizens, disrupting traffic and public and private establishments, disrupting the production flow, and shouting in order to provoke sedition by saying « Down with the rule of the military and the interior are thugs ». The prosecution ordered their detention pending investigations.
