Maria Al Metwally Samaha

15-year-old Maria Al Metwally was on Maria way to class when security forces broke up a demonstration against the current Egyptian government in Maniya al-Nasr. She was assaulted by city council officials. She was handed over to the Maniya Nasr center on December 18, 2013 on the pretext that she was a participant in the demonstration. She was then presented before the prosecution, who ordered her detention pending investigations. On February 6, 2014, she was sentenced to six months in prison for the first charge, with bail of 1,000 pounds to temporarily suspend the sentence, and six months’ imprisonment for the second charge, also with 1,000-pound bail to suspend the sentence. She was fined 20,000 pounds for the third charge and confiscation of seized items. She obtained release on 8 February 2014 after making bail. She appealed the sentence but the verdict was later upheld on 26 June 2014. – Violations: – she was insulted and beaten during her arrest – she was prevented from taking her exams.
