Yousra Alsayed was arrested on November 12, 2013, on the campus of Mansoura University amidst demonstrations at the university. The prosecution decided to detain her on the basis of case No. 7 of 2014. She was sentenced to three years in prison on May 21, 2014 and then acquitted on appeal on November 18, 2015. She was also sentenced in May 2014 to three years in prison in another case, accused of violating the security of the university. This verdict was upheld in appeal. She was also charged in a third case, number 2144 for 2013, and acquitted on June 23, 2014. She continued to be transferred between several prisons, the most famous of them being the Mansoura Public Prison, the Mona Al-Nasr Center and Al-Abada prison in Damanhour. She was released on November 18, 2016 after serving three years. She was placed on the presidential pardon list in November 2016 after she had already completed her original sentence. Violations she was subjected to: poor detention conditions, as she was placed in a 1×1.5m cell with criminal prisoners. Then she was moved to a 4x6m cell with 30 other criminal prisoners, who were accused of robbery, murder, and drug trafficking. The cell did not have ventilation or light, and they slept while sitting. – difficulty in visits, as they could not be longer than 5 minutes and they took place from behind a barrier so that not even a handshake was possible.
